Other than the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 of the Rubicon 392, the Jeep Wrangler is struggling to come as exciting over the hype train known as the all-new Ford Bronco. Given these circumstances, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to emulate a few things from the competition and beyond it.
JL Wrangler Forums member JDyj90 has recently been emailed a survey consisting of three off-road features for the Wrangler, starting with Bronco-inspired turn assist. The way this system works is simple in theory. More to the point, “controlling the brakes allows the vehicle to pivot on a locked inside rear wheel to turn, improving the ability to maneuver in tighter spaces.”
The second of three off-road features listed in the survey is four-wheel steering. Many automakers offer this optional extra, which improves stability at high speeds, maneuverability at low speeds, and handling under cornering. In the case of the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S-Class for the 2021 model year, 4WS enables the rear wheels to turn up to 10 degrees.
Last, but certainly not least, diagonal steering. Jeep is asking the original poster about “the ability for both the front and rear wheels to be turned in the same direction, allowing the vehicle to move sideways in a diagonal movement.” Care to guess which off-roader is available with this feature?
Hummer EV is the answer you’re looking for, and GMC refers to this system as Crab Walk. Marketed as a trailblazing innovation, I can’t imagine Jeep engineering this feature in any ol’ Wrangler, but the Wrangler EV.
We first heard about the all-electric powertrain option in 2018 during the Capital Markets Day, and global brand president Christian Meunier had something interesting to say about it as well. Speaking to British motoring publication Autocar last year, the French-born executive described the Wrangler EV in Rubicon specification as “the most capable Jeep ever.”
At the present moment, the only zero-emissions Wrangler in the lineup is the 4xe. A plug-in hybrid that combines two electric motors with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, this version is available to order from $47,995.
