The model received not only styling and driving dynamics, but also an evolved version of the MZR 2.3-liter DISI petrol engine from the previous MPS, mated with a six-speed manual transmission. The new model enters the European C non-premium sports compact segment, where the old version of the Mazda3 MPS was very successful.
The car’s exterior design is based on the second-generation Mazda3 hatchback, but with a more aggressive and sporty look. A new air-intake is now positioned in the middle of the bonnet and the front end is exclusive for the MPS. Moreover, it has a new front bumper and front fenders that are larger than those of the normal lineup.
Other redesigned elements include the front grille and lower bumper, side under-spoilers, larger roof spoiler and LED tail lamps, while the 18-inch lightweight wheels have the same 3D design theme as the alloy wheels of the Mazda RX-8.
Moving forward to the performance enhancements, the 2.3-litre DISI Turbo petrol Euro V engine produces 191 kW/260 HP of maximum power at 5,500 rpm and reaches the maximum torque of 380 Nm at a low 3,000 rpm. The new-generation MPS sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
On the inside, Mazda’s new MPS is both sporty and practical. The shift lever of the six-speed manual transmission is now 60 mm higher and slanted towards the driver, while the semi-bucket front sport seats and the driver-oriented cockpit and dashboard offer a sportier feel.
Moreover, depending on the market, the Mazda3 MPS comes with a standard or optional 10-speaker Bose premium surround-sound system, with Audiopilot2 noise compensation and Centerpoint surround system.
