You wanted to know everything about the new BMW M3, the sports sedan everyone is talking about? You've got it.
After the normal 3 Series and M340i, it's pretty clear that the next M3 will be something amazing. And the rumors suggested this generation would offer more versions than ever.
Ahead of the official reveal in September, BMW M division boss Markus Flasch has let slip a bunch of specs for his 2021 model year baby which also tells us everything we need to know about the M4 coupe/convertible.
Starting with the specs, CAR Magazine has learned that the 3-liter bi-turbo engine being used, the S58, will indeed make 480 HP in the normal M3. On top of that, you'll be able to buy an M3 Competition with 510 HP.
These are the same numbers as the newly launched X3 M and X4 M, so no big surprises here. However, it means potential buyers can decide on buying the M3 several months ahead of the launch.
The AWD system will be needed to make sure this power increase will be put to good use. However, like the M5, this more compact speed machine will still put a RWD mode at the disposal of the driver. The gearbox is not a DCT, but an 8-speed auto.
Flasch has also stated that a version for the driving purists is on the way. Rumors talked about the M3 Pure as having about 450 horsepower, a manual gearbox and RWD, plus a few of its luxury features stripped off. It's less about lap times and more into forming a bond between man and machine.
“Drivetrain-wise, think about the M5’s all-wheel drive system – we are able to put it in the M3 as well. It’ll be very similar. But we will also do rear-wheel drive cars, purer ones too and a manual stick shift," the official stated.
BMW would be the last of the three German big three to have a manual in such a car, as both the Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63 both lack a third pedal. You can get one in the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, though.
