The 200 horsepower 2-liter turbo, shared with the Polo GTI, is everyone's favorite engine from the new Audi A1. However, premium supermini is going on sale in Germany with only the 1.0-liter, codenamed 30 TFSI.
So, with half the displacement, can the A1 still excite you? It might after you add all the frills, but because prices start at €21,150, it's difficult to do that. That's a lot of cash considering a Polo GTI with a DSG box starts from under €24,000, and a MINI Cooper S is about the same.
But we can't think like that. Being base on the MQB A0, the new Audi A1 has plenty of sister cars with which it shares several parts. Theoretically, the cheapest is the Ibiza, which would be €18,500 with the same 115 HP 1-liter turbo. And Audi even charges more for the DSG box - €1,700.
Right now, the A1 doesn't have that many equipment lines, only advanced, S line and edition one. Besides S line, the other main packages worth considering are the Dynamic Package and Infotainment Package, both costing about €1,000. The former brings lowered suspension, 16-inch disk brakes with red calipers, adaptive damper, a drive mode selector and a Soundaktor, which we've never seen before on a 1-liter model. The other pack adds MMI Radio plus, digital cockpit and the Audi phone box.
Don't you wish those things were free in such an expensive car? Also, you're probably going to spend another €980 on the LED headlights, without which the A1 Sportback looks cheap.
While we do love the sporty look of the smallest Audi, right now, it's more expensive than the equivalent A3. We'd wait a few more months for a better deal or to have access to the more powerful 1.5 and 2.0-liter turbo engines, which will add another layer of appeal. But in the meantime, you can play around with the official configurator.
