Mustang, the 45 Year Old King of American Road

As we told you several times this past two weeks, Ford is preparing itself for the 45th celebration of the Mustang, an iconic vehicle its creator calls "the king of the American road" (some of us here at Autoevolution agree with that statement).

The celebration ceremony (read party) will take place in Birmingham, Alabama starting today, with thousands expected to attend. Throughout the weekend, more than 2,500 Mustangs, model year 1964 through 2010, will be on display. On Saturday and Sunday the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge will take place, featuring at least 25 Mustangs racing each day.

Today's Ford news release is all about the owners. After bragging about the car for themselves, the manufacturer gave the opportunity to put the Mustangs into the spotlight to the everyday owner, each one prouder than the other..

"People come up to the car and they don't believe that I'm the original owner," said Phil Florio about his Wimbledon White 1964 Mustang Coupe. "I knew from day one that it was going to be a very special vehicle. A lot of car manufacturers have come out with their own particular type of pony car, but there's only one 'first".

In addition to the events in Alabama, Ford is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Mustang by introducing "The 10 Unleashed" campaign, which gives enthusiasts the chance to unleash their "Mustang side" behind the wheel of the new 2010 Mustang, every few weeks all the way until August the 15th.

"During its 45 years, Mustang has touched people's lives in so many different ways, and we've enjoyed hearing those stories leading up to the introduction of the new 2010 Mustang," said Allison Revier, Ford Mustang brand manager. "Now, it's time to look forward and create new stories to fill the next chapter in the history book of America's favorite muscle car."
