Mustang 45th Anniversary, Final Leg

The 45th anniversary of one of the American automotive icons, the Mustang, is expected to bring together in Birmingham, Alabama, more than 2,500 of enthusiasts. The event will take place on April the 17th, a date named by the State of Alabama "Mustang Day". The celebrations will stretch for a four days long weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.

The pilgrimage to Birmingham will begin in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 11, and is expected to grow into an at least 500 car convoy. Before arriving in Birmingham, the organizers anticipate that the convoy will double in size.

"We have people coming in from 15 foreign countries, including Australia, Denmark and France. And some of them may be bringing their cars with them," Jim Farley, Ford Group VP of Marketing and Communications said in a release.

When the event starts on Thursday night, 650 Mustangs will cruise in line from the Barber Motor Sports Park to Homewood, Alabama, a small city 15 miles outside of Birmingham, for a street party complete with food and live entertainment.

Throughout the weekend, more than 2,500 Mustangs, model year 1964 through 2010, will be on display. On Saturday and Sunday the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge will take place, featuring at least 25 Mustangs racing each day. Professional road racers will show off in Mustang FR500S race cars.

Ford Racing will offer installation of Ford Racing performance upgrades for late model Mustangs in an on-site "Mustang Garage" for the duration of the event.

"For four and a half decades, Ford has connected with more than 9 million owners celebrating their individuality, passion and love of the Mustang. Mustang created the segment and remains America's number one muscle car delivering a fast, fun and affordable car that personifies the freedom of the open road," added Farley.
