Pontiac GTO production increased significantly for the 1968 model year, with over 77,700 units rolling off the assembly lines in coupe and sedan body styles.
The convertible production received a boost, too, as the carmaker manufactured close to 10K GTOs with a removable top.

The base GTO was fitted with a 400 engine rated at 350 horsepower (code WT for the manual transmission and YS for the automatic configuration). Over 72,000 GTOs produced this year rolled off the assembly lines with the base engine.

Pontiac offered several versions of the 400, but the icing on the cake was the Ram Air II 400 introduced mid-year for the original Ram Air configuration. The Ram Air II made its way to only 246 GTOs produced in 1968, of which 47 used an automatic transmission.

The Ram Air II would be a perfect match for the green-on-green GTO that landed on eBay earlier this week courtesy of seller paradiselane1975. The car looks like a project sitting for years, so it now went online specifically to look for a new home.

You don't have to be a genuine connoisseur to understand this GTO needs a complete restoration. I won't comment too much on its condition because the photos speak for themselves, but it's worth emphasizing that the floors and the trunk are solid. You'll still find rust on this GTO, including in the quarters and the fenders, but the car is far from becoming a rust bucket. It has likely been sitting inside, though the chances are it has also served as a donor for other GTO projects.

The GTO ticks many boxes for a restoration candidate, though bringing the car back to the road isn't aimed at beginners. The green exterior and the matching green interior could make this GTO a head-turning machine if restored correctly.

The rarest GTO for the 1968 model year was the convertible fitted with the new Ram Air package and an automatic transmission. Pontiac produced only 22 units. However, a coupe with the same package is a highly desirable classic that could be worth a small fortune in tip-top shape.

The bidding for this handsome GTO starts at $7,500, but it looks like most potential buyers find it too expensive, so the auction hasn't received a single bid so far. The good part is that the auction doesn't come with a reserve, meaning that once someone submits an offer of at least $7,500, the car is ready to leave for a new home. The digital fight will end in five days, so it won't take long until we find its outcome.

Meanwhile, you can find the GTO in Rapid City, South Dakota, but the owner says they also listed the car locally, so you must hurry up to get your hands on it.
