Even though the third generation of the Focus is yesterday’s news, the diesel-powered Focus ST sold in Europe is now available with more suck-squeeze-bang-blow thanks to Mountune. Enter the m460D, an upgrade that consists of an ECU re-flash.
"Mountune has been producing market-leading power upgrades for over a decade and this is the first time we’ve been able to unlock the potential in an ST diesel product," explains David Moore, global brand manager at the British company. “The standard Focus ST diesel is a great base car, but with the m460D kit installed we’ve been able to make it smoother, quicker and generally even more fun to drive."
Priced at £350 in the United Kingdom, the m460D is compatible with manual transmission-equipped models with the 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. The do-it-yourself version of the upgrade, meanwhile, costs £429 because it includes a dongle and cable.
In addition to the 20-horsepower bump, the package is rounded off by a Mountune badge and key ring. In regard to performance, adding 20 horsepower on top of the bone-stock output shaves off 0.7 seconds from the vehicle’s zero-to-60 time thanks to an extra 50 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 31 to 62 mph (50 to 100 km/h) is also halved, but that’s not all there is to the m460D.
According to Mountune, the improvements in real-world performance don’t affect the DPF regen strategy. David Moore also talks about a “smoother, quicker, and generally even more fun to drive” Focus ST, and who could say no to that?
In related news, the fourth-generation Focus will soon welcome the ST into the family. Nobody knows if Ford will retain the 2.0-liter EcoBoost and 2.0-liter turbo diesel of the previous model, but in all likelihood, that’s how the Blue Oval will do for the hotter version of the compact hatchback. Come 2020, the RS should drop by with mild-hybrid assistance and somewhere in the ballpark of 400 horsepower.
