Converting classic vehicles to electric power is a way of breathing new life into older models. It's a great solution for those who cannot part ways with their beloved vintage cars but want to enjoy their timeless elegance and charm without the inherent fumes and breakdowns. The conversion market is booming, offering a wide range of options to classic car lovers who want to make the switch to electric power.
Moment Motor Company is one of the outfits that can redefine and futureproof automotive icons by marrying the authenticity and nostalgia of classic cars with the cutting-edge technology of electric vehicles. The latest addition to the Texas-based company's portfolio is the Mercedes-Benz 280SL "Pagoda," which is part of their Signature series of classic conversions. It will be built as a limited-run model, seamlessly blending the 280SL's vintage aesthetics with electric drivetrains.

Moment Motor Company, a venture that started its journey in the conversion market in 2017, was born out of the founder's vision to breathe new life into classic cars through electrification. They carefully select the vintage vehicles they will subsequently fit with an EV powertrain and have experience working with a large spectrum of iconic models, such as the BMW 2800CS, Alfa Romeo GT Veloce, Porsche 911, and even the DeLorean DMC-12.

Through their artful, meticulous conversion process, the expert team not only removes emissions but also the hassle of maintaining an outdated gas-powered engine, all the while preserving the driving experience unaltered. Each conversion is also done with an eye out for maintaining structural integrity, preserving the original appearance and styling of the car.

"While the passion for these vehicles has endured throughout the decades, their functionality hasn't stood the test of time. Through our tried and true design process, we offer collectors the ability to take highly celebrated but seldomly used vehicles from their collections and convert them with electric drivetrains for everyday usage," explained Marc Davis, founder of Moment Motor Company.

Thanks to their electric retrofit, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda, one of the world's most celebrated luxury roadsters, is now a smoother, more fun-to-drive vehicle suitable for daily use and modern driving conditions. The newly fitted 400-volt electric powertrain offers 300 hp of power and 370 lb-ft of torque. This is nearly twice as much as the original car's M130 mill, which boasted 168 horsepower.

Besides the three-phase permanent motor, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL also received a 62kWh battery pack that is said to offer 175 miles (282 km) of range, a fully integrated vehicle control system, as well as electric brakes and steering.

Through an ongoing collaboration with Unique Cars of Palm Beach, Moment Motor Company can turn the over half-a-century-old car into a completely restored, fully electrified classic masterpiece. As for pricing, the conversion alone will set you back about $135,000, the donor car not included. Moment can help you source a restored, fully assembled turn-key vehicle through its partner for an additional $250,000.
