On Monday, Mitsubishi released a very long and detaailed statement regarding the line of pickup trucks it sells across the world as the Triton or L200. Somewhere hidden in this long eulogy, news about a brand new car.
Why eulogy? Because the current generation L200 has reached mid-life, being introduced in 2015. A facelift, if not more, is in order, and Mitsubishi just gave us a glimpse of a redesigned pickup that will enter the market probably this year, captioned “the future of the pickup will soon be revealed.”

There’s no word on where the new car will be first shown (the Paris Motor Show is just around the corner, so revealing the car during the event, even if not on site, might be a good bet) let alone on what this new L200 will be all about.

The pick-up truck has a long and twisted story to it, being called in so many ways that along the way it nearly lost its identity.

When it was first launched in 1978 in Japan, it wore the name Forte. For the U.S. market, it was called either Mitsubishi Truck or L200. It was also marketed by Chrysler as the Dodge Ram 50 or Plymouth Arrow.

A long time after that the second generation arrived in 1991, as the Strada for the Japanese market. It was rebranded in 1995 as the L200 Strada and was named as such until 2005, when the Triton name was born, coming straight from the carmaker’s Thai design offices.

“It's a pickup truck that can handle all types of road, anywhere on the planet,” says the carmaker about their star pick-up.

“It has been developed with a design brief - to meet the desire of customers for a pickup with outstanding reliability, durability and payload performance; with levels of drivability, utility, comfort, and ride that are on a par with a passenger sedan.“

Wherever this pick-up will break cover, we’ll probably know more about it in the coming weeks.
