The A-Class hatchback is known as the W177, the sedan goes by the codename V177, and the China-exclusive sedan with the long wheelbase is called Z177. Introduced in April at Auto China 2018, the longest A-Class of them all is now in production at the Beijing-Benz Automotive Co. Ltd plant in Beijing.
Designed to meet the expectations of Chinese customers, the notchback sedan features six centimeters of additional wheelbase (2,789 millimeters compared to 2,729). The first compact sedan produced by BBAC is joined by the GLA, which is also popular with China despite the old-gen platform.

Like the hatchback and regular-wheelbase sedan in Europe, the A-Class L Sedan comes as standard with the MBUX infotainment system that takes connectivity to an unprecedented level compared to previous models from the three-pointed star. Artificial intelligence and customization are the highlights of MBUX, and as a further option, intelligent voice control can be activated by the driver or passenger with the phrase “Hey Mercedes!”

With active assistance systems from the S-Class, the A-Class L Sedan also happens to be one of the safest and most technologized cars in the segment. The generous dimensions enable more shoulder, elbow, and headroom than ever before, whereas the long wheelbase has clear benefits for the rear passengers.

The 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder co-developed with Renault is the only engine available at launch, available in two outputs: 136 and 163 horsepower. Later on, the A-Class L Sedan will introduce a range-topping option displacing 2.0 liters, capable of churning out 190 horsepower.

“Since our first locally produced Mercedes-Benz rolled off the production line over a decade ago, our business has shown rapid development here in China,” said Hubertus Troska, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for China. “In 2016, we celebrated the one-millionth vehicle locally produced at BBAC. Just two years later, we reached the milestone of two million ‘Made in China, for China’ cars that clearly shows the impressive growth of our business, thanks to the support of our local customers.”
