Revealed with great pomp and circumstance at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 hasn’t set foot on European ground yet. For that, we’ll have to wait for the 2017 Geneva Motor Show to open its doors to the public in March.
The most popular Mazda in Europe, the CX-5 is a make-or-break model for the Japanese automaker. Longer and lower than the 2016.5 model year, the 2017 CX-5 also features a slightly sexier body shell than its predecessor. The cabin is another strong point of the compact-sized crossover SUV.
There’s no info on European specifications for the all-new CX-5, but the JDM model should offer a glimpse of what’s cooking. 2.0- and 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated engines, 2.2 SkyActiv-D for the diesel-loving public, a six-speed manual transmission for the keen driver, six-speed automatic for the comfort-minded driver, and that’s about it.
At the 87th edition of the Geneva Motor Show, Mazda will also unveil the 2017 CX-3. Considering no test mules or prototypes were spied by the carparazzi, the 2017 model year is your average update. Highlights include standard G-Vectoring Control, upgraded safety features, and ALH. In Mazda jargon, that’s short for as Adaptive LED Headlights.
In addition to those bits and bobs, the CX-3 gains a redesigned steering wheel, better display quality (i.e. the full-color head-up display), added ride comfort, and improved NVH levels. As for the 2017 Mazda2, which is available only as a hatchback in Europe, the updates will reflect those of the CX-3.
On the oily bits front, both the CX-3 and Mazda2 will retain their current engines and transmissions. In the supermini’s case, the least exciting but most economical powerplant is a 1.5 SkyActiv-D turbo diesel. If it’s driving thrills you’re after, the CX-3 1.5 SkyActiv-G 120 PS can offer those.
At the other end of the scale, the MX-5 Miata is in a league of its own.
