Since we now know that as of next year, Mazda will be offering a diesel version of their all-new 6 in the States, we can better understand why they have opted to enter the Grand-Am racing series, in 2013, with a diesel-powered racing version of the new car.
The actual car will debut at the Rolex 24-hour endurance race, which is set to take place on January 26-27, 2013, at Daytona Beach, in Florida. John Doonan, Mazda’s North American Motorsport Director said: “We have been eager to announce this car for months, but had to wait until the production car was revealed [ . . . ] We're happy to report that the engine is meeting the performance targets for both power and endurance. That means 400+ hp for over 50 hours, with an engine that includes a very long list of production Mazda parts.”
To make the point more clear, Doonan added that “this is not a pure race engine; it is a production block SKYACTIV-D. We're excited about having our newest engine powering our newest car." We are looking forward to seeing and hearing this 400+ hp diesel-powered racer, and we hope it looks just like the car in the teaser, as all of the bolt-on racing bits really go well with the sleek and sporty design of the car.
Also, it is the first ever diesel-powered car to be entered into the Grand-Am series, so it is somewhat of a historic moment for the racing series, as well as Mazda.
