It’s been a while since we wrote about the Mazda1 and just when we were starting to wonder if the project had been buried, it came back into the spotlights. It seems that Mazda is still considering building a model that would be slotted under the Mazda2. If the vehicle does make it into production, it won’t be a model for developing markets, but rather a global product that will also be offered on established markets.
Mazda CEO Yasuhiro Aoyama explained that the company is considering two possibilities. It can either build a vehicle that follows the same recipe as the VW Up!, or come up with a budget car that can also be offered in established markets.

Mazda is expected to use cost-cutting moves and thus the carmaker could team up with another car company to develop the Mazda1. The Japanese automaker already works with Ford, with the Mazda2 sharing the platform with the previous-generation Fiesta, but Mazda is expected to join forces with Fiat for its upcoming entry-level model, so this could be connected to the next Fiat 500 (the current 500 shares its platform with the Ford Ka, but this probably won't be the case in the future). The information comes after the two sides made it official that the next-generation of the MX-5 will be a joint-development and will also spawn an Alfa Romeo model.
