Mazda Sells Well in Australia

Conflicting reports about sales figures, which indicate disaster for some or so called "record" sales for others, continue today with Mazda's self-praising release, in which the Japanese manufacturer posts "record market share for the first three months of the year."

The announcement was made in light of the arrival of the new Mazda3 in Australia. The company is happy to bring the new model to a market in which it now holds 8.9 percent, according to VFACTS figures (new motor vehicle sales compiled with data provided from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries). The figure represents a 0.7 percent increase compared to the previous figure. In all, Mazda sold 19,024 vehicles in 2009 in Australia, 6,116 of which in March.

"It’s pleasing to see the outgoing Mazda3 selling so strongly in its last month on sale. March has paved the way for the arrival of the New Generation Mazda3 that takes the perennially popular first-generation model to a whole new level," Doug Dickson, Mazda Australia managing director said in a release.

The new generation Mazda3 already arrived Down Under and will go on sale this week. The first generation Mazda3 is Australia's best selling small vehicle, with 8,914 units sold in the first three months of the year.

The enthusiasm we see when reporting a 0.7 percent increase in market share is one of the things that point out the difficult times the automotive industry is going through. In these times, market shares are, in our opinion, irrelevant, as they do not express the health or sickness of this sector of the industry. It's like having a bigger piece from a smaller pie. Glossy, yet useless.
