Mazda has only been making vehicles on Skyactiv platforms for a couple of years, but already this relatively small Japanese automaker has managed to built and sell over one million of them. The official announcement was made today by the automaker, who said its three all-Skyactiv cars have actually exceeded the magic marker, with 1,040,000 units as of the end of March 2014.
Skyactiv engines have been used in the Mazda3 before these new models came out but Mazda only started counting after production of the Mazda CX-5 began in November 2011. After that came the new Mazda6, also known as the Axela, production of which started in August 2012 at the Hofu plant in Japan. The same year, the production capacity of CX-5 SUVs at the Hiroshima factory is increased from 160,000 to 200,000 right as the model is named Car of the Year Japan.

The following year, Mazda finds it needs to boost CX-5 production once again, to 240,000 units. In July 2013, the all-new Mazda3 begins being assembled in Hofu, while the following month China opens its own assembly line.

The three existing Skyactiv models will soon be joined by the new Mazda2/Demio subcompact, to be produced in Mexico. The automaker is also planning a small crossover based on the 2, which will be called the CX-3 and should go on sale in 2015.

Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO, Masamichi Kogai had this to say about the company's first major Skyactiv milestone: “At Mazda we put everything into developing our Skyactiv vehicles, and it is because these models have struck a chord with a wide range of customers all over the world that we have reached the one million-unit landmark. On behalf of Mazda, let me express my gratitude to each and every person who bought one of our cars. With our undying challenging spirit and a great deal of hard work, Mazda will continue to make even more appealing cars that will enrich the lives of their owners, and help us build a strong and lasting bond with our customers.”
