The NHTSA issues campaign number 13E048000, recalling a whopping 13,709 (so far) backrests from Victory's Lock & Ride accessory line.
According to Polaris, the group in control of Victory Motorcycles, the backrests for Cross Country, Cross Country Touring, Cross Country 8-ball, Cross Country Touring, and Hardball machinery may fail in case it is used with a luggage rack attached to it. Needless to say that a backrest failing when riding with a passenger can cause serious injuries.
The motorcycle model years are 2010 through 2013, so that's why the number of recalled parts in so big. Backrests in both chrome and black (2877938 and 2877938-266, respectively) are subject to this recall. The luggage racks causing the issue have part numbers 2877950 or 2877950-266.
Polaris will inform customers in September 2013, with a follow up notification in Spring 2014 when parts are expected to be available for repairs.
