The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announces new safety-focused plans to help the owners of cars, light trucks and motorcycles verify whether their vehicles are part of a recall.
The principle is very simple and extremely effective, as the NHTSA will provide free online Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) database searches via their recall and safety website SafeCar.gov. Owners will be able to enter the VIN of their vehicle(s) and check whether the respective machinery is part of an incomplete recall and if action must be taken.
Currently limited to a basic search using make and model, the functionality of the NHTSA-run SafeCar.gov website will be dramatically expanded and made easier. A mobile app is also being developed for on-the-spot information delivery on safety features, recalls and more.
The NHTSA will also be requiring more info from the manufacturers to help make this system work better and offer more accurate safety-related data. While any safety concern is not ot be taken lightly, when riding on two wheels, the risks are far greater than when driving a car, and that's why we completely salute this initiative.
