A safety-related recall was issued by the NHTSA for the 2009-2013 Indian Motorcycles designed by the previous owners of the brand.
According to Indian Motorcycles, the affected bikes are manufactured December 10, 2008 through November 1, 2012 and designed by the previous owner of Indian Motorcycle, housed in Kings Mountain, NC. They might have been assembled using a defective rear rim which could, under certain conditions, crack and cause tire pressure loss.
If this happens fast, the deflation of the rear tire might cause steering problems which could lead to a crash. Indian advises that a visual inspection of the rear rim is mandatory prior to riding these bikes, as well as pressure checks. In case a crack is detected, the bike should not be ridden until a replacement rim is installed.
Owners can contact their nearest Indian Motorcycles dealer or the Indian Motorcycle Consumer Service Department at (877) 204-3697.
Indian also states that the recall does not affect any of the new 2013 Indian Chief bikes launched at Sturgis in early August.
