Most major players in the maritime industry are making sustainability and environmental protection more central to their shipbuilding practices. Alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and methanol, are quickly becoming commonplace as yacht designers and builders are making strides in shaping a new era for the superyacht industry.
Italy-based design studio MASK Architects is playing its part in this ongoing effort towards the common goal of "zero carbon emissions" by designing revolutionary vessels that set new standards for luxury and eco-conscious cruising.

Their latest project, designed in collaboration with Alchemist Studio, is a groundbreaking, emissions-free superyacht called ONYX H2-BO 85 that will not only run on hydrogen but will also produce it onboard using seawater for electrolysis. And besides its impressive credentials in terms of eco-responsibility, the new design is also a vision for luxury yachting.

MASK Architects, led by Oznur Pinar Cer and Danilo Petta, has just unveiled the renderings for the new project and touts it as the world's first superyacht propelled by its own onboard hydrogen production. The 270-foot (85-meter) watercraft will produce hydrogen gas through an energy-efficient process called electrolysis - a technique that uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Onboard hydroelectric turbines will help with the electrolysis process, thus creating clean energy, cutting emissions, and reducing the yacht's environmental impact during short cruising distances.

According to MASK Architects, the superyacht will generate sustainable power by capturing the kinetic energy of the surrounding water. The task will be performed by the vessel's hydroelectric turbines. The hydrogen thus produced will be stored onboard in tanks or containers and will provide easily accessible energy during low-speed sailing and anchoring. The green fuel can be used for powering engines, generators, or fuel cells or stored as a backup power source.

"The ONYX H2-BO 85 represents a significant leap forward in environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, onboard comfort, and financial savings. In a world where environmental consciousness takes center stage, this cutting-edge technology positions the yacht as the premier choice in the marine industry," said MASK Architects.

Beyond its green credentials, ONYX H2-BO 85 also ensures guests onboard enjoy a lavish yachting experience. The renders show a vessel boasting a sleek profile, with a wave-piercing hull, clean lines, and extensive glazing throughout for a seamless transition between exterior and interior spaces.

The vessel's interiors exude modern elegance and refined sophistication, incorporating bespoke design solutions able to meet the needs of the most discerning owners.

The luxury onboard experience is ensured by opulent cabins and lavish lounging areas that are crafted with great attention to detail and high-quality materials.

The state-of-the-art interiors, combined with cutting-edge technology and sustainable elements, contribute to the creation of an eco-conscious superyacht that is able to realize the dream of a more sustainable approach to cruising.
