A little over a decade ago, following her father's death, which plunged her into depression, Lizzo was living out of her dad's Subaru. Today, she is TIME’s Entertainer of the Year, one of the most publicized singers and songwriters of the moment, and the daughter who can make mom’s wish come true.
Said dream bears the Audi emblem.
In one of her latest Instagram posts, Lizzo included a video of how she got into the Christmas spirit early by presenting mom with her dream car. It was a brand new Audi Q5 waiting for her in her driveway, red ribbon on top and everything, and it made for the most wholesome celebrity content you’re likely to see this week.
In the caption, Lizzo explained how, when her father died in 2009, she made a resolution she would spoil her mother. She started last year by buying her her first house.
“Got my mommy a brand new Audi for Xmas,” the star wrote. “I remember crying in my car when my daddy passed, no job no money nowhere to live, wishing I could one day provide for my family.. I couldnt do it for my dad so ima make sure I spoil Mama. Happy holidays y’all.”
The video shows Shari Johnson-Jefferson, Lizzo’s mom, being escorted outside, for her early Christmas present. Her reaction is heart-warming: she starts to sob in disbelief, and that’s before she’s told it’s an Audi, which, apparently, has been her dream car since forever.
“You see these things on television and you never expect it to happen to yourself,” she muses to herself, clearly overcome with emotion.
In older interviews, Lizzo, who is worth an estimated $10 million, recalled how she would live out of her dad’s Subaru during the height of her depression following his passing. Back then, she could only dream of being able to support her family. Today, that dream is reality.
