Global sales of new cars have dropped by 39 percent in the month of March, due to the current and seemingly never-ending international health crisis. In the UK alone, this has paved the way for one unlikely contender to swoop in and claim the crown.
Britain’s best selling car for the month of March 2020 is a very surprising one because, well, it’s not a car at all. Little Tikes reports that its Cozy Coupe has moved a whopping 85,000 units in one single month, according to national publication The Sun.
This impressive number has allowed the Cozy Coupe to win the title of UK’s best selling car, beating former number one Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta has held onto that top spot since 2009, but it was only able to sell 15,987 units, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to the same media outlet.
Given the current situation, the fact that a toy car has become the hottest selling “car” is not exactly surprising. Adults are either working from home or have been furloughed, and all non-essential travel by whichever means of transport, including personal vehicle, has been banned.
The uncertain economy, the looming economical crisis and the ban on all outings has translated into a visibly decreased interest in purchasing new cars. At the same time, the same adults who are no longer working and are no longer allowed outside, have kids they simply have to keep entertained. All kid-related retail businesses have seen an uptick in sales for that same reason.
Little Tikes cars have always been popular, and not just in the UK – so much so that adult-versions have popped up every once in a while. This report is a silver lining in a storm of bad news, if you will.
“We’re thrilled to see the Cozy Coupe is still the car of choice for families throughout the UK,” Andrew Turner from Little Tikes tells The Sun. “As kids spend an increasing amount of time at home, we’re seeing many families inject creativity and personality into play. And with 15 different varieties there’s a Coupe for everyone.”
