The past weekend saw the Lamborghini Super Trofeo one-make series reaching Spa-Francorchamps and, alas, this will go down in history as a dark race. That's because one of the cars went off the track, plowing into a marshall post.
With only four laps to go (under nine minutes of the event, which was the second race of the weekend, were left), car #32, which was leading the race, was pushed off the circuit. Driver Fredrik Blomstedt has little space to react, with the Lamborghini Huracan going straight into the #12 marshall post.
Luca Mauron, who was driving the #92 Huracan, misjugded a passing maneuver and veered into the side of the said Raging Bull, sending this towards the barrier on the side of the track.
Four marshals were behind the barrier at the time and while you would expect such an element to offer the neccesary protection, this wasn't the case. Three of the marshals managed to jump their way out of trouble, only sustaining minor injuries, but the fourth had to be hospitalised for more serious issue, as it was the case with Blomstedt. Fortunately, as an official statement from the SRO Motorsport Group explains, everybody survived the accident.
The race was stopped, with Blomsted thus becoming a red flag winner.
"All were immediately attended by the circuit medical staff. One marshal and the driver have been transferred to hospital for medical checks. However, their injuries are not life-threatening. Following a delay of 1 hour and 30 minutes, track activities have now resumed," the statement reads.
The officials are now investigating the accident, especially since this came after the said violent maneuver of the #92 car.
"SRO Motorsports Group, RACB and the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps would like to thank all of those involved in the medical assistance that followed the incident. Furthermore, we would like to wish a speedy recovery to all of the marshals and the driver involved,” we are being told.
