Ahead of their official debut in Geneva, Kia has released official specs for what they say are their most performance-oriented cars ever.
In order to turn them into hot hatches, Kia has fitted both the three- and five-door Cee'd models with a powerful new engine. The Korean automaker's 1.6-liter GDi units now has forced induction, a twin-scroll turbo that helps increase power output by 51 percent to 204 PS (201bhp), and torque up 61 percent to 265 Nm.

Equipped with this new unit and a six-speed manual gearbox, the Kia Pro_Cee’d GT and Cee’d GT can accelerate from 0 to 100 k/h (62mph) in 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 230 k/h (143 mph).  They can also accelerate from 60-100 k/h in fourth gear in 5.4 seconds, 80-120 k/h in fifth gear in 7.3 seconds and 80-120 k/h in sixth gear in 8.8 seconds.

Even though these are C-segment hot hatches, they are far off the pace of what we'd consider to be their main rivals, the Golf GTI, Focus ST and Opel Astra OPC. However, all those models have bigger 2-liter turbos.

A more fair comparison would be the Astra Turbo, who's 1.6-liter engine has 180 PS an is thus a little slower, reaching 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and stoping its speedometer needle at 220 km/h. Ford meanwhile has never tried warm hatchbacks, but does offer a 180 PS turbo engine as well, which predictable is also slower than the two Kias.

But what the high-performance Kias lack in actual performance, they make up for in looks. Designed in Germany under the guidance of Peter Schreyer himself, the Pro_Cee'd GT and Cee'd GT have sportier grilles, bumpers and headlights.

The LED daytime running lights have been removed from the headlights and added to the lower bumper, just above the fog lights. This four-point LED design is the main focal point of the car and should get you plenty of attention. The lower grille is more deeply set and has a blade at the bottom painted in contrasting red. Dual-exhaust pipes, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, eye-catching red brake calipers and a range of special paint finishes are all standard. The same level of equipment is also reserved for the interior: Recaro sports seats, alloy pedals and a seven-inch TFT screen.

“The world premiere of Kia’s new pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT highlights the diversity of our current product line-up and underpins the natural expansion of the brand into the performance car market, an important step forward for Kia,” comments Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Kia Motors Europe.  “The new Kia pro_cee’d GT will have great appeal for motorists looking for style, performance and dynamism in their next car – and the cee’d GT adds an extra level of practicality for buyers who prefer five doors.”
Production and European deliveries will start in May. Prices and trim levels will be announced closer to the launch date.
