The first generation of Kia’s oddly-named Cee’d was a very big hit in Europe, where people appreciated its honest build quality, excellent diesel engines, great warranty, good practicality and surprisingly good driving dynamics. Now, Kia’s second generation car builds on the aforementioned qualities, while also adding an extra dose of style - the Sportswagon which has just gone on sale in the UK is no exception.
As we have come to expect, the Slovakian-built car is pleasant to look at, even in estate guise and it comes to complete the Cee’d range in the Isles. It comes with a choice of two engines, both of which are diesels - a 1.4-liter unit with 89 hp and the highly-appreciated 1.6-liter unit which develops 126 hp and 260 Nm (191 lb-ft). Both engines get excellent fuel efficiency and emissions ratings, with the 1.4 achieving 67.3 mpg (4.2 l/100km) and the 1.6 getting 64.2 mpg (4.4 l/100km). All engines come equipped with six-speed manual gearboxes, with the 1.6-liter being available with a six-speed automatic.

Pricing starts at £16,895 for the base 1.4, in ‘1’ trim, and rises to £24,795 for a ‘4 Tech’ trim car, powered by the 1.6-liter unit. When it comes to equipment, even the base car comes decently specced, with roof rails, electric and heated mirrors, iPod connectivity, ESC and VSM, as well as Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC). Opt for ‘2’, and you get LED DRLs, leather-clad steering wheel, four-electric windows, cruise control and parking sensors. The first two trim levels are so generous, that we say most sales will be of these two particular specs.
