Keeping Your Lane Is Always Important, Even More So Inside a Tunnel

Driving on public roads will expose you to all kinds of bad behavior from the other motorists you’re sharing the asphalt with, but one of the most dangerous has got to be cutting corners on the opposite side of the road.
People do that because they’ve watched too many racing videos and so instead of seeing the separation line between the two ways, they see a racing line in every bend. That maneuver obviously takes them into the path of oncoming traffic whenever there’s a left-hand turn (or right-hand for those reading this in the UK, Australia, Japan and so on).

But this is not the case. The guy in this clip isn’t cutting corners, and there’s a very good reason to back this statement up: he drifts away in a straight line. Judging by the movement of his car, he either falls asleep or he’s reaching for something inside the car and loses focus on the road ahead.

Whatever the case, the resulting crash is pretty nasty, especially since the oncoming car is a very old model with terrible safety ratings. And as if colliding nearly head-on with a pretty fast moving car weren’t enough, a white van traveling too close (or having poor brakes) doesn’t have enough space and time to stop and slams the poor innocent guy from the rear as well.

Luckily, it looks like all drivers and passengers involved were wearing their seat belts, so it doesn’t look like anybody was seriously injured. In fact, the silver car that caused the whole incident appears to have suffered the most, being spun around after ricocheting off into the oncoming van.

The title of the original video appears to put the blame on the white Lada coming out of the tunnel for not having its lights switched on, but that doesn’t explain or excuse what the driver in the silver car did one bit.

So, bottom line, switch your lights on when entering a tunnel (or, better yet, always keep them on if your car doesn’t have DRLs) and try to stay off the oncoming lane when not overtaking. If you’re feeling sleepy, pull over. If you need to search for a peanut, pull over. It’s as simple as that.
