Just two days separate us from the moment when the tenth edition of the Rugby World Cup will kick off over in France. Starting with September 8 and for the following month or so, fans of one of the most popular sports on one side of the planet will get to see a total of 16 national teams go head to head in a bid to win the Webb Ellis Cup.
As it often happens in the case of such high-profile events, a lot of companies that usually have nothing to do with rugby are involved in the competition as partners and sponsors. Among them is Land Rover, whose Defender was named a while back the competition's worldwide partner.

For the past months now the Brits have been pushing the accelerator pedal on this partnership, announcing for instance back in June a bespoke Defender 110 built in honor of the Webb Ellis. It then went on to announced it will be a partner for the women's Rugby World Cup, which will take place starting October 8 in New Zealand.

Today's rugby-related announcement from Land Rover comes however as something car lovers, even those with less of an appetite for rugby, can enjoy as well: a new, limited edition of the Defender dedicated to the tournament.

Simply called… Limited Edition, the small series of the SUV is based on the Defender 110 P400e hybrid and carries just enough extra appointments to make it unique and memorable.

The design of the Defender in this configuration is inspired by the trophy car I mentioned earlier. On the outside it stands out thanks to its Santorini Black with gold detailing paint scheme, the script on the hood, and the specially designed 22-inch alloy wheels. Rugby World Cup 2023 logos can be seen on the front fenders.

Inside, all seats carry the mark of the international competition on the headrests.

No modifications have been made to the SUV's powertrain, meaning the stock 2.0-liter hybrid moves the wheels of the Limited Edition as well.

Land Rover says it will only make 23 of these SUVs, and each of them will wear a stamp identifying it as 1 of 23. All the vehicles will only be available to French retailers, for prices that have not been disclosed.

As per Land Rover, all the Limited Edition Defenders will be delivered to their customers long after the 2023 Rugby World Cup had ended, in March 2024.

Until then, we'll all get a chance to witness the next best thing, the Defender trophy car, on October 28. During the final match of the competition, it will be driven right on the field to deliver the Webb Ellis Cup to the winning team of the competition.
