The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Defender are Land Rover's most in-demand products today. Even so, the British automaker's build quality leaves much to be desired. The latest recall issued by Jaguar Land Rover concerns a handful of Range Rover PHEV utility vehicles, of which one was produced for the United States in February 2023.
As implied by the headline, the culprit is an incorrectly torqued bolt that may lead to excessive heat generation. Said heat may puncture the high-voltage battery casing, resulting in a fire. JLR became aware of this problem in January 2023, following a report from the field over a potential concern with the 2023 Range Rover PHEV.
The report prompted Jaguar Land Rover to initiate a thorough investigation. Come March 2023, out of an abundance of caution, the company issued a stop-sale order. The Product Safety and Compliance Committee within JLR, together with the Battery Assembly Plant Team, reported their initial findings on May 2, 2023.
As per the BAPT, the aforementioned problem stems from the bolt connecting the HV connector to the busbar. Fast forward to August 2023, and the Recall Determination Committee acknowledged that said condition represents an unreasonable risk to the safety of the driver, occupants, and other traffic participants.
Jaguar Land Rover isn't aware of any fires related to said problem. All of the affected vehicles will have their high-voltage batteries replaced at no charge to the owners. In the United States, the owner of the sole affected vehicle will be informed of this blunder no later than October 6.
The high-voltage battery pack bears part number M9Z3-10B759-CA. Gross capacity is 38.2 kWh, whereas usable capacity is rated at 31.8 kWh. Over in the United States, the Range Rover PHEV is available to order at $141,100 (excluding the destination freight charge) for the Autobiography P550e Standard Wheelbase. P550e is another way of saying petrol (a.k.a. gasoline) and 550 metric ponies, which converts to 542 hp.
In regard to peak torque, 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) is more than adequate for a vehicle this heavy. The internal combustion engine comes in the form of a 3.0L inline-six turbo developed by JLR with Tata's money. Indian automaker Tata purchased Jaguar and Land Rover back in 2008 when Ford sold them for $2.3B.
Currently available to configure for the 2024 model year, the Range Rover PHEV offers an electric range of 51 miles (82 kilometers). The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will be soon joined by all-electric siblings, which will be available to pre-order from late 2023.
Both of them ride on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture, which supports anything from purely internal combustion to zero-emission setups. The next-gen XJ and J-Pace were supposed to feature said platform, yet Jaguar pulled the plug on both in 2021.
