Scheduled to stay around until 2016, the current generation Jeep Wrangler needs new engines and transmissions in order to cope with new fuel economy standards, Chrysler & Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said today.
"We need to roll up our sleeves and get it done. I think on the Wrangler side, we need to allow for the applications of new engines and new transmissions," Marchionne revealed during an analyst call, adding that said changes won't happened until after the 2014 model year.
The current Jeep Wrangler is sold in the US with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with either the five-speed manual gearbox or the six-speed automatic transmission.
Back in February, Jeep CEO Mike Manley said the Wrangler could gain a diesel engine in 2016, when the next-generation model is scheduled to be introduced.
