The 2019 Mercedes B-Class is ack in heavy camouflage, even though previously sighted versions were all but revealed. This, combined with the lowered stance of this prototype, has led us to believe that an AMG model might be under covert development.
Since about 2012, when these small AMG models started surfacing, we've always reported that one based on the B-Class is unlikely. Mercedes themselves said the market case doesn't work, and it's even worse now, as MPV/tourer sales are falling in Europe.

Everything, from the wheels to the body kit of this prototype, could just belong to the AMG Line. However, the stance seems too low for that job, while the camouflage seems excessive. Other AMG test mules started out this way and gradually gained the right exhaust setup, as was the case with the CLA.

So what could have changed for Mercedes to move forward with this project? Well, for starters, we're not talking about the full-fat 45 AMG treatment, but of the 35 version. It's a lighter tune of the familiar 2-liter turbo engine and would cost less.

Still, recent reports suggest a "35 AMG" engine is supposed to have 340 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. The AWD and launch control will help generate an insane amount of speed for a family car.

If you think about it, the fast+practical formula isn't much different from a Skoda Octavia RS Combi or a Leon Cupra ST, both of which do well and cost over €30,000. Mercedes doesn't have that kind of wagon in its range, so it may have approved this crazy B-Class.

Over the years, there have been slightly unhinged MPVs made for European buyers. Opel made the 240 HP Zafira OPC until 2010 while Ford had its 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the S-Max. Of course, they didn't have AWD and twin-clutch gearboxes, but prices were way different back then too. A Mercedes-AMG B 35 would cost at least €40,000.
