It’s been about six month since Ferrari hinted that the new 1.6-liter V6 Formula One unit could power a LMP1 prototype in 2015, and a mysterious race car was spotted at Mugello, confirming that the Italians are indeed up to something.
The scoop comes from AutoSprint and reveal a mid-engined race car that features several aerodynamic modifications, including a huge rear wing. Although not suitable for an endurance race such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the wing is likely part of a setup for the Mugello track, which means the prototype is far from being in a late development stage.

There are no additional details at the moment, but we should find out more about this project soon enough. However, AutoSprint says we shouldn’t expect to see this Ferrari being raced earlier than 2016.

Ferrari’s last attempt to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans took place back in 1973, when three factory-backed 312 PB race cars were lapped around the Circuit de la Sarthe.
