Andy Granatelli, former Indianapolis 500-winning car owner and CEO of STP motor oil company, passed away at the age of 90. The Texas-born entrepreneur died of heart failure at a Santa Barbara hospital.
Known for the STP-Paxton Turbocars he nearly won the 1967 and 1968 Indy 500 with, but also for the wins Mario Andretti and Gordon Johncock gave him in 1969 and 1973 respectively, Granatelli is a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
He was also inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2001 and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.
“The thing that gave him the most gratification in his life was what he did at the Indianapolis 500. Everything he did was bigger than life,” said Andy Granatelli’s son, Vince.
Andy Granatelli is survived by wife Dolly and sons Vince and Anthony.
He was also inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2001 and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.
