The Infiniti M Hybrid is fresh as a new car can be, so while it still has an aura of mastery surrounding it, the luxury carmaker has released the first ad from a new campaign that is aimed at changing customers’ perceptions of what a hybrid is and does.
Stating that they’ve made the first hybrid you’ll want to drive, Infiniti puts some very interesting cards on the table: the M offers 360 hp for the enthusiastic driver, while also returning 32 mpg. The video takes us back 100 years in time to when the hybrid patent was born, then goes through the hybrids of the 70’s and reaches modern time.
According to Infiniti, the 2012 M Hybrid directly challenges “the notion that you can’t have great performance and great fuel economy”. But the video doesn’t mention anything about the model that made hybrid a household name, bringing the technology to the masses.
There is even a shot where the Lexus GS 450h is pictured on the road ‘watching’ the Infiniti M Hybrid run by. We think Nissan’s luxury division wanted to say that the Lexus is now obsolete, as it is a 2011 model year, while the M is a 2012 model year.
“The new Infiniti M Hybrid provides the same level of luxury and performance as the rest of our lineup and builds on the strengths Infiniti has always been known for,” said Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore. “Style, luxury and performance will always be the cornerstone of everything Infiniti does.”
Only time will tell if bold claims can translate into sales, but one thing is for sure: Lexus never makes a commercial for its hybrids that shows the car going sideways.
