To arrive at U.S. retails in the summer of 2020, the Infiniti QX55 promises a roofline inspired by the first generation of the FX mid-size crossover. You know, the FX which morphed into the QX70 in 2013.
Discontinued for the 2018 model year, the QX70 was available with either a 3.7-liter V6 from the 370Z sports car or the 5.0-liter V8 from the Titan pickup truck. Based on the nomenclature of the newcomer, it’s likely the QX55 will slot in the compact segment while featuring QX50 parts.
The second generation bears the codename P71A, and it’s manufactured in Mexico for the U.S. market. Be it front- or all-wheel drive, the QX50 was unveiled as a concept at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit before entering production for the 2019 model year. Only a CVT (continuously variable transmission) is available, and as a first for Infiniti, the VC-Turbo engine can change its compression ratio between 8:1 and 14:1.
A few weeks after Infiniti registered the trademark for QX55, the luxurious counterpart to Nissan has released a sketch of the model that doesn’t show as much as we’d expected. From a visual standpoint, most changes will take place behind the B-pillars. These should include the tailgate, rear quarter panels, and rear doors in addition to the more athletic roofline and silhouette.
“The Infiniti QX55 is a stunning new SUV coupe in the heart of one of the industry's fastest-growing segments, globally," declared deputy chairman Mike Colleran. "Customers will appreciate the distinctive design of the QX55 which features a sporty coupe-like roofline. We know customers and retailers are eagerly looking forward to the QX55 which will be available next year."
Reading between the lines, don’t get your hopes up for something completely different from the QX50. Bearing in mind the QX50 doesn’t even come close to the leaders in the segment, we’re not sure what Infiniti hopes to achieve with another crossover in a sea of crossovers with no redeeming features.
