Infiniti Considering Top Performance Sports Car

The automotive world has its own way of dealing with the stress caused by the global financial crisis. We are talking about the constant evolution of the performance vehicles segments, a process which has seen more and more go-fast cars belonging to all segments of the market coming to the world and laughing in the global downturn’s face.

Now, it seems that we should be preparing for yet another example that would come to confirm this. Infiniti, Nissan’s premium division, is currently considering the possibility to produce a top performance sports car, as autocar reports.

Earlier media reports indicated that Infiniti could come up with its own version of the Nissan GT-R, but there have been no clues that this will become a reality. Instead, the aforementioned source indicates that the automaker could be working on a top-spec coupe that would be based on the Essence concept, which was brought to the world at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show.

Infiniti is currently a stranger to this ultra-performance segment. However, its main rivals, Acura and Lexus aren’t. The first has been a top contender in the past (with the NSX), while the latter currently plays at the top level, offering the LF-A supercar.

However, the car we are talking about might never become a production vehicle, as Infiniti is currently busy with other plans that manage to make a better business case. One of them is the announced European expansion, which will see the carmaker offer a rival for the BMW 1 Series and a premium electric vehicle based on the Nissan Leaf.
