Four years ago, CES was where the S-A1 made its debut. Today, the S-A2 steps into the spotlight, displaying a seamless combination of state-of-the-art automotive design and aeronautical technology. From now on, it's just a matter of time before this concept turns into a commercially ready air vehicle with the Hyundai Motor Group DNA.
CES 2024 visitors in Las Vegas have three more days to check out the Supernal Vertiport exhibition. They'll have the opportunity to take a closer look at the S-A2, which is the latest version of Supernal's eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing), and even experience a simulated flight above the city of Los Angeles, in addition to learning more about the importance of dedicated eVTOL infrastructure.
Four years after introducing the original S-A1 concept, Supernal is taking the next step and unveiling the latest upgraded version of the passenger-carrying electric aircraft. A V-tail aircraft designed to transport four passengers plus the pilot, the S-A2 promises a cruising speed of 120 mph (193 kph) and a range of 20 to 40 miles (32 to 64 km). This would be enough for regular urban flights in the beginning. To meet the requirements for city operations, the new eVTOL also lowers noise levels drastically – according to the manufacturer, it won't be louder than a dishwasher.
What makes the S-A2 stand out among similar concepts is the automotive background of its manufacturer. Supernal is the AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) company of the Hyundai Motor Group, and it harnesses the benefits of this connection on multiple levels.
One is the aircraft's state-of-the-art design, directly derived from the Hyundai automotive design. The Group's designers worked with Supernal engineers to create one of the most impressive electric air taxi concepts.
The signature minimalist design features seats with aviation-grade components that absorb energy and the use of different colors and materials to delineate various sections inside the cabin. The Hyundai DNA was also leveraged to enhance passenger experience during flight. The S-A2 claims to focus on both passenger comfort and sustainability.
Last but not least, Supernal plans to take full advantage of the Group's mass-production capabilities, including its established supplier network. This could be a game-changing advantage against the competition because it will allow Supernal to ensure the highest levels of quality while also keeping costs within affordable limits.
It will take a few more years to reach commercial certification, but when it does, the Supernal air taxi might blow many eVTOLs out of the water.
The AAM company is now focusing on turning this final concept into a commercially viable air taxi, aiming to kick off regular city flights by 2028. The main focus points for the near future are what Supernal calls interior modularity for an even more efficient interior design and the ability to upgrade the aircraft's battery module constantly as battery technology continues to evolve.
