Hybrid sales have steadily risen over the last few years, and now, thanks to the launch of the Prius V and C, Toyota’s (and overall) hybrid sales have been boosted even further. Reportedly, the increase in the total number of hybrids sold is quite substantial, at 200%, which translates into almost 30,000 hybrids sold so far in 2012, when compared to the same period of last year.
If you think this is a big growth figure, wait two more years and allow more manufacturers to add hybrids to their range (and they will) - the figure will be considerably higher and it looks like the hybrid is here to stay, not only as a novelty or a quirk, but a genuine option for buyers who now choose between petrol, diesel or hybrid.
Toyota is the global initiator of the ‘hybrid trend’, having started it in 1997, with the original Prius, a quirky car which gained cult status for its clever use of technology and relatively low price. Other manufacturers soon followed, with Honda bringing out the Insight three years later, a car which is still very good even by modern standards.
