According to Transport Canada, the country's ecoTECHNOLOGY program designed to “assess the safety and environmental performance of new vehicle technologies to ensure that innovations can be introduced in Canada in a safe and timely manner,” according to Denis Lebel, Canada’s Minister of Transport.
The program will last 5 years and will cost the Canadian taxpayers $38- (€30-) million, and it will focus on testing advanced vehicle technologies, and improving the existing safety and environmental regulations. The main aim of the initiative is the alignment of vehicle regulations to those of the US, and in doing so, business’ and consumers’ costs will decrease, while offering new job opportunities in the process.

The first phase of ecoTECHNOLOGY was aimed at testing environmental technologies only for passenger cars, with the second phase coming in to include trucks and commercial vehicles. It will further help Canada in its commitment to reduce its overall emissions by 17% until 2020, using 2005 as a benchmark year.
