Honda Showcases Dual Clutch Transmission

Honda took another step in the realm of modern machines with the introduction of their new Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) system, to be featured on the all-new NC700XD and other bikes in their ranks.
Since there are a lot of people who aren't used to the automatic transmission gearboxes, especially in Europe, Honda decided to start a promo campaign, showcasing the capabilities of the new transmission system. While the DCT is mainly aimed at the North American market with its traditionally automatic gearbox-loving customers, this new technology may find some new fans in Europe, too.

Older riders may find the absence of a shifter lever a bit too radical, but for those willing to try something new, these Honda models will surely be fun. And younger riders may grow to appreciate them even more. Since the debate between traditional shifting and automatic gearboxes is not the subject of this piece, we'll leave it aside for another time.

As mentioned above, Honda's DCT eliminates the clutch and shifter levers, and does all the switching by itself in the Drive and Sport modes, leaving the pilot choose the appropriate gear in the Manual mode. Shifting is done by small switches, much paddles on sport cars, and switching between riding modes is extremely convenient,a ll at a press of a button.

Manual downshifting is possible in automatic modes, and the bike will revert to full-automatic shifting the moment it detects there's no more need for the engine brake. Remains to see whether riders will agree to trade good old serious gear-shifting fun for the automatic gearboxes.
