The production of the Honda PCX 125 scooter began in September 2009 at the A.P. Honda Company in Bangkok, Thailand, and went for sale in the same year in November. In 2010, the scooter was launched in the UK and US, while the larger PCX 150 was released in the rest of Europe and Japan.

At the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda unveiled two new versions of the PCX, also known as the PCX 125 Digital, a hybrid and an electric version. The latest version of the PCX was expected to be released to the public in 2018, with new features, such as a new tubular steel frame and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).

The 2021 Honda scooter, also known as the PCX125/160 ESP+, received a new facelift, including a redesigned duplex steel cradle frame, more storage under the seat, traction control with Honda Selectable Torque Control, and an intelligent key for the keyless ignition system.

The global-selling version of the Honda PCX was fitted with an idling stop system that turns the engine off after a few seconds of idling. However, it was not included in Canada due to safety concerns, so it featured a kill switch and a parking brake.

For stopping power, the 2018 Honda PCX was fitted with a 220 mm disc and a dual-piston caliper on the front, while the rear was handled by a 130 mm drum unit for solid braking performance.

The suspension was handled by a 31 mm telescopic fork on the front end, while the rear was driven by an aluminum swingarm with dual-shock absorbers.

In the performance department, the 2018 Honda PCX 125 featured a 125cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with an electronic fuel injection system, delivering 12 hp at 8,000 rpm and 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) torque at 5,000 rpm.
