Regarded by many as the greatest driver ever to race in Formula One, Ayrton Senna passed away 19 years ago in a terrible crash during the San Marino Grand Prix. The Brazilian has three World Championships to his name, all of which he has won while driving for the Honda-powered Marlboro McLaren team.
Also involved in the development of Honda’s famed NSX sportscar, Senna remains to this day an important figure in the Japanese automaker’s Hall of Fame. Now, almost 21 years after Senna’s last season in a Honda-powered McLaren, the Tokyo-based manufacturer pays tribute to the Brazilian through the new “Sound of Honda” video.
Using telemetry data and audio samples from the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix, Honda has recreated one of Senna’s qualifying laps at the Suzuka track. The Japanese also installed a network of speakers and lights throughout the whole track to make it look and sound like Ayrton Senna himself was driving at Suzuka 24 years later. Check out the video below.
