The Indian branch of Honda, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has recently become the country's second largest manufacturer in terms of sales, switching places with KTM's partner Bajaj.
Affected by strikes in one of their largest plants in Chakan, Bajaj saw a sales drop, and Honda was there to make a solid move. Given the huge size of the Indian market, the figures forwarded by Honda are impressive: 287,177 motorcycles and scooters were sold, including exports, in July only.
One more Honda premiere has also been recorded in this matter. Honda sold more motorcycles than scooters: 147,635 motorcycles compared to 139,542 scooters. Autocar India reports that this is because of Honda Dream model, which was a solid hit.
Honda has apparently been pushing more units than Bajaj during the last few months, but the first semester sales still see Bajaj getting the better of Honda. As the labor issues at Bajaj' plant in Chakan seem to have solved, it is expected that the battle will be briefly resumed in stronger terms.
