Honda managed to prove once again that the official consumption figure of the new 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine can be achieved in real life. During the 2013 MPG Marathon, the same 120 PS engine set a record 84.87 mpg record while powering the smaller Civic.  This time around, the turbo diesel was incorporated in the new Honda CR-V SUV and meticulously tested on UK roads.
The rigorous test lasted two whole days and was done by two individual drivers, Ian MacKean and John Kerswill. The CR-V covered more than 500 miles and managed to obtain 77.86mpg on various road conditions and at speeds that are the same as the ones in real-world driving. This is almost 20% better than the claimed figure of 62.8 mpg.

“A lot of people doubt that the official consumption figures of new cars are achievable in real life, and with some cars that might be true. But we've shown conclusively that it's possible to not only match but far exceed the CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC's official 62.8mpg, which is itself a pretty amazing figure for such a large vehicle,” said one of the drivers, John Kerswill.

This particular Honda vehicle has quite a lot of potential as its fuel economy 1.6 i-DTEC can cover up to 800 miles on a single tank of fuel and since its CO2 emissions are as low as 119g/km, the CR-V qualifies for £0 road tax. This only applies for the first year, afterwards you’ll have to pay £30 per year.

If you’ve been thinking of buying a fuel-efficient car, the British built CR-V might be the one for you.
