Honda today announced it will enter the the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with a racing version of the European Civic. The automotive producer joined forces with Mugen and J.A.S. Motorsport, with the first set to build a custom racing powerplant developed by Honda R&D and, together with team J.A.S. Motorsport will develop the race car, based on the Honda Civic 5door produced in Honda’s Swindon site,
“We have made a decision” said Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito “to enter into the WTCC with the European Civic. We will develop a totally new engine for this project and we are all excited about starting this new challenge.”
The aforementioned unit is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol that follows FIA’s Super 2000 rules. Honda will enter the 2012 season with a few “inaugural rounds, including Japan (held on 21 October 2012 at Honda’s Suzuka circuit), followed by China and Macau with a two-car team, with the company set to go full-season in 2013.
