For Holden fans who were waiting for a revival of the Thunder nameplate, the Australia division of American manufacturer GM has good news: the VE Series II Ute will receive a Thunder special edition.
Set to enter the market no later than next week, the new Thunder Ute will be offered with the Gen IV V8 engine as standard, but also, for the first time, with a V6, embodied by the 3.6l SIDI V6. The first unit will go into the Thunder SS version, while the second will form the backbone of the SV6. Both variants can be ordered with either a six-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed automatic transmission.
Being a special edition, the new Thunder will benefit from a series of little extras meant to make it more appealing. They consist of charcoal-finished 19-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, leather seat bolsters and Thunder badges. The model can be ordered in ten different exterior colors.
“Over 60 years of production, the Holden ute has evolved from typical tradesman’s transport to two-door sports machine with a practical edge - that’s epitomized by the Thunder range,” said John Elsworth, Holden Executive director of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales.
“It is a really bold, tough looking ute which we think will appeal to many of our traditional sports ute buyers. We’re expecting it to be an absolute winner in our showrooms.”
The prices for the new model have also been announced, just in time for fans to get their bank accounts in order, The Thunder Ute will cost in between AU$34,990 (SV6 manual) and AU$39,900 (SS manual).
