Android Auto wireless adapters have become incredibly popular in the last few years, and this is mainly thanks to AAWireless.
It's the device that started it all and invented this product category, allowing users to convert a wired connection into wireless. AAWireless (and almost every other Android Auto wireless adapter) connects to the car's USB port (the one powering Android Auto) to act as a middleman between the mobile device and the head unit.

You connect the phone to the adapter via Bluetooth, while the adapter is connected directly to the head unit using the USB cable.

Wireless connections bring a long series of benefits, but the most obvious is the lack of a cable. I don't know about you, but keeping cables in my car is extremely annoying, especially because I like things clean and organized. With Android Auto wireless, I can keep my phone in my pocket and still run the app without having to plug it in every time.

AAWireless allows anyone to get this experience if their car is compatible with it. And starting this week, it's significantly easier to tell if a car is compatible with AAWireless thanks to an all-new compatibility checker on its website.

The tool was designed as a wizard, allowing users to pick their car and the model year and have their compatibility results sent to their inbox. You'd think that all cars support an Android Auto wireless adapter, but this compatibility checker proves that some models, especially older vehicles, wouldn't be able to offer a wireless experience. Otherwise, using this compatibility checker is a piece of cake, though you can't see the results on the website but only provide an email address to have them mailed to you.

Theoretically, if AAWireless works in your car, most other Android Auto wireless adapters should support your model, too. It's because they're built on a similar concept, so you could use AAWireless' compatibility checker to determine if another wireless adapter works with your car.

Meanwhile, the company that brought us AAWireless is already working on the second generation, with the device expected to launch later this year. In addition to Android Auto, it'll support CarPlay, allowing Apple users to convert a wired connection into wireless using the same approach. The CarPlay support is already in the beta stage and works with certain device models, but once the new generation is out, it should be available out of the box. AAWireless did not reveal when the new model is scheduled to launch.

The most popular AAWireless alternative comes from Motorola. The MA1 Android Auto wireless adapter was launched two years ago during Google's I/O event, offering similar capabilities to allow users to ditch cables in a car where only Android Auto wired is available.
