The chances are that you've already come across OsmAnd if you were looking for a Google Maps alternative, as the application is one of the most advanced free navigation solutions currently on the market.
In addition to its impressive feature lineup, OsmAnd also gets frequent updates, and compared to Google Maps, whose main focus is on subtle refinements not even worth mentioning in changelogs, the app receives major improvements.

Version 4.7 is live on the App Store with big changes.

The new OsmAnd version includes a wide range of changes that users who are only interested in a straightforward navigation experience wouldn't be interested in – to be fair, OsmAnd isn't just a regular navigation app, as it offers significantly more advanced capabilities that pro users will love.

For example, version 4.7 includes improved management for tracks visible on the map, with two new sections now available (visible and all). Paying users are also getting 3D visualization for tracks based on altitude.

The update includes new widgets you can add to your navigation interface, including Sun Position and Glide Ratio. You can find them under Menu > Configure screen > Widgets on your iPhone.

You should read the full changelog if you're a tech-savvy user (I embedded it in the box after the jump) because it includes many other changes that significantly improve the experience with OsmAnd on an iPhone.

The update also brings a small goodie for CarPlay users. Starting with version 4.7, OsmAnd can display detailed roundabout information during navigation on CarPlay, with the app getting support for exit numbers. It's a small but essential refinement, as roundabout navigation is now more convenient, especially on unfamiliar routes.

OsmAnd remains a super-advanced navigation solution, offering impressive tools for route planning and recording. The GPX track integration is one of the features most users love, as they can plot a route point by point, record it with GPX tracks, and share them in OpenStreetMaps.

Compared to Google Maps, OsmAnd also offers an improved navigation experience that doesn't just send you to your destination on the fastest route. The application also takes into account more information, such as the vehicle dimensions, so you could use it for larger vehicles. The GPX track integration and the additional terrain information allow you to see road inclines and other data, so the planning phase is significantly enhanced.

The GPS navigation interface is fully customizable, and integrating new widgets in every update gives users more customization power. They can see important details, such as distance, speed, and remaining travel time, but also more advanced information coming in handy for professional drivers, such as the sun's position (after installing the new update I told you about today).
