GM's Effort to Help Haiti Passes $1 Million Mark

One month+ after the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti, the needs of those left without shelter, food and water are far from being satisfied. Worldwide efforts to help the people in Haiti however continue and even expands, as fundraising events, auctions and donations keep being organized for Haiti.

The automotive world was among the ones which responded very quickly to the calls for help coming from Haiti. We reported several times how manufacturers round the world rallied and donated money, trucks and just about anything asked of them.

In GM's case, the combined donation from Chevrolet, GMC, General Motors, the GM Foundation and its UAW just surpassed the $1 million mark, after two fund-raising drives raised more than $35,000 this week.

“The outpouring of support from friends and coworkers in every part of General Motors has been really remarkable,” John T. Montford, Chairman of the GM Foundation said in a release. “I believe our combined efforts will make a significant difference in the lives of the Haitian people.”

So far, this drive to reach out to Haiti manifested itself in countless ways. GM, together with UAW employees from 11 facilities in North America, held gate drives to collect donations for American Red Cross and raised $26,881, while visitors to Washington, Philadelphia, and Chicago auto shows donated $8,786 to a collection box fitted in the bed of a Chevrolet Colorado.

The GM Foundation donated $800,000 in support and 30 GMC Sierra pickups, Chevy raised $250,000 during the 39th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction while five unnamed individuals contributed $10,000 each...
