German carmakers Audi and Volkswagen announced today they will help set up a football match between Germany's current and record champions, VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern Munchen, as a means to raise money for the Haiti relief effort.
The proceeds from the match, which will be played not for the win, but for the people, will be donated to the “We want to help – A heart for children” campaign and benefit the victims of the earthquake catastrophe in Haiti.
“We have all seen the horrible pictures from Haiti, we were deeply shocked, and it was immediately clear that we would help,” Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the Management Board of the Volkswagen Group said.
“It is our duty and our responsibility to give financial assistance to the people in Haiti,” added Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Management Board of Audi.
"There are moments when championship points or goal scorers’ charts simply do not take center stage,” Bayern striker Miroslav Klose said. He was completed by Wolfsburg’s defender Marcel Schafer: "In our team, it was also immediately clear that we wanted to help. So, we are happy that Bayern and we with their respective partners make it possible to support this cause with this game.”
Audi and Volkswagen guarantee 1 million euros will be collected during the match, as they will donate the difference to cover what is raised from the selling of the tickets. The date of the match has not yet been set, but it will take place in the next few months.
