It took Ford only one month to book reservations for no less than 11,000 2011 Ford Mustangs, triple the number of previous generation units ordered in the same time frame. Although the exact reason behind this all-out Mustang frenzy remains a mystery, the American manufacturer blames it on new powertrains and the first ever Mustang Club of America (MCA) Special Edition.
According to Ford's stats, half of the Mustangs ordered have a V6 heart: the Duratec 3.7l dual overhead-cam (DOHC) Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) engine. Developing 305 horsepower and providing 30 mpg in fuel economy, this model registered a 19 percent increase in orders compared to the last generation.
“The new engine transforms Mustang,” Steve Ling, North America Car Marketing manager said in a release. “Everything people love about the car lives on, and now under the hood is a V-6 engine that uses premium technology to deliver the power, the feel, the fuel efficiency, even the sound of the best sports cars in the world.”
The first MCA Special Edition tripled the expectations of its creators, while the Mustang GT caught the eyes and pockets of some 41 percent of those ordering a Mustang this year. The GT, powered by a 5.0l Ti-VCT V8 engine, delivering 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. Only 9 percent of orders however have been placed for the Shelby GT500.
“Mustang is ready for a new generation of buyers,” Ling said. “With new high-tech and fuel-efficient engines, class-leading connectivity and infotainment options as well as signature style and performance, Mustang is poised to continue its legacy as America’s favorite sports car.”
